DRAFTED INTO ARMY,
ENDS UP IN THE NAVY
I was drafted into the Army in 1967 but ended up in the Navy. I went through the
induction
physical and tests in Oakland, CA and went home with orders to report to the
Army in seven days. It happened while I was in graduate school. Unfortunately
for me, grad School deferments, except for those in medical and theological
programs, were lifted nationwide at that time.
In my senior year in college, I had gone thru the process of applying for Navy
OCS; taking the physical and going thru all the interviews. Back then, I wanted
to be a Supply Officer. Things were so competitive with Viet Nam you had to have
a Masters to get in that program. So when accepted for grad school for my MBA, I
asked the Navy to put my OCS application on hold.
When told to report for the Army physical, I immediately contacted the Navy.
Luckily, I had moved and my old draft board gave me 30 days by transferring my
file to my new draft board in San Jose, CA. But at the end of the month, the new
board immediately sent me the same notice to report to Oakland.
My college landlady's son was a Navy Capt, the CO of Mare Island Shipyard. He
made some calls also in my behalf. Whatever, three days after I was inducted
(four days before I was to report) the Navy called and saved the day. I had
already put my affairs in order. My Navy OCS training report date was six months
away so I was able to finish the semester and then enjoy my summer.
Interestingly, when I finished my active duty and returned to graduate school, I
found my business classes to be incredibly boring. So I got my masters in Mass
Communications instead.
